National AAA chooses SCANVenger Hunt to increase attendee interaction & engagement during its annual Marketing and Technology Conference. The trade show Gamification platform replaced their traditional card stamping model for one with a lot more value.

It’s a common issue for meeting and events planners across the country: how do you get hundreds or perhaps thousands of attendees at your event to interact and stay engaged? It’s an issue meeting planners for the 2013 AAA/CAA Marketing and Technology Conference faced, and one they were able to solve using the SCANVenger Hunt platform to add gamification.

“We really were looking for something that would be interactive, that would get the different departments intermingling together,” Brittney Shaw, a senior meeting planner with AAA National, explained. “With so many different business lines within one conference, they don’t normally interact with each other.”

The 2013 AAA/CAA Marketing and Technology conference at the Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort in Phoenix brought together about 500 attendees from across the United States and Canada, and also included several international delegates from automobile associations from around the world. Shaw said the goal was to give attendees a chance to interact with one another and discuss different aspects of marketing, e-business and technology, which also made the SCANVenger Hunt a perfect fit.

“We wanted something that would get them up and moving and kind of had a technology-base to it, so that’s why we wanted to incorporate the SCANVenger Hunt into it,”

Shaw said. “We looked into a few other vendors to do the scavenger hunt, but the reason we did it specifically with SCANVenger Hunt was because it gave us a lot of flexibility on what we could do. We could make it work within our program instead of having to build our program around somebody else’s platform.”

The SCANVenger Hunt is also easy to participate in because the only equipment a participant needs is a smartphone. For the AAA/CAA conference, organizers placed custom QR codes in different spots throughout the resort. Participants scanned each custom code, which then revealed a question about AAA/CAA or even a question about the area they were visiting that they then had to answer in order to earn points and prizes.

“The concept of having QR codes in key areas around the resort, both hidden and then also in sessions and our break times, has been really good,” said conference attendee Lara Baker who works with AAA Arizona. “It keeps people engaged. It gives people a reason to attend all of the sessions. It’s super easy to do. It’s been a lot of fun.”

The SCANVenger Hunt platform not only encourages meeting and conference attendees to be more engaged in their event, it also generates reports on the amount of activity during the SCANVenger Hunt for clients.

“The SCANVenger Hunt platform works great for trade shows because the questions usually are directly related to the exhibited product or service, which encourages the attendee or the player to interact with the company representative to find the correct answer,” said Sean Fields, co-founder of SCANVenger Hunt.

The SCANVenger Hunt platform is currently being used in more than ten states by CVBs, DMCs and event planners. It can be tailored to the specific needs of each client to help them teach customers more about their brand, increase foot traffic or enhance their customers’ overall experience and level of interaction.
